SQUALANE + HYALURONIC ACID: A DREAM TEAM

Whether you’ve yet to hear about it or not, squalane may just be the next big thing in skin care. Pair with hyaluronic acid, and you have an intensive duo of hydrating ingredients. They have several similarities. Besides the fact that both are very hydrating, each, in some form, comes from a substance that naturally occurs in the human body.

Squalane

Squalene (with an e) is the naturally occurring form of squalane. It’s a type of fat that is produced naturally by the body. It’s also made by animals and plants. Just like hyaluronic acid, it is intensely hydrating. Squalene can be transformed into the more stable squalane (with an a) through the process of hydrogenation.

In addition to being an excellent moisturizer, squalane is a good detoxifier for the skin. It also can help boost collagen in the skin. It evens out your skin tone, helps with texture issues, and can help control the overproduction of sebum on the skin.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It can hold over 1000 times its weight in water. It is found in many places, from connective tissues to the fluid in our eyes. It’s part of what gives skin hydration. With age, hyaluronic acid starts being produced in lower quantities.

Hyaluronic acid is used in many medical applications. It can be injected into joints, for example, to improve hydration and lubrication of the joints. And, of course, it’s very popular for use as a cosmetic. A lack of hydration causes the skin to appear more aged than well-moisturized skin. Hydration=volume and that volume smoothes skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is often used in injectable formulas as well as in anti-aging creams and serums.

Which is better?

Each is beneficial in its own way. Squalane is fat-based, while hyaluronic acid is more of a clear, gel-like substance. Squalane hydrates by forming a barrier on the skin to lock moisture and hydration in, while hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin from within. Both are excellent skin care ingredients in their own right, but using them together can help you maximize their benefits!

Looking for a vegan product that also contains plant-based squalane? Check out our facial serum. It is the ideal last step in your skin care routine, with squalane helping to lock in moisture, both from the products you’ve applied and your skin’s natural moisture.
