Vitami C - Apollo & Artemis Beauty

Vitamin C: Skincare Ingredient's Guide

Vitamin C is a key skincare component to having brighter, tighter, and better-looking skin. Most dermatologists agree that it is the most potent topical antioxidant. It neutralizes free radical damage, helps reduce skin inflammation, protects the skin against UV light and irregular pigmentation while also being a natural collagen booster. Unfortunately, our bodies do not produce powerhouse this ingredient, it is found in fruits and vegetables and commonly produced skincare products, such as moisturizers, toners, and serums.

The science behind

A study found that the healthiest skins and organs contain high concentrations of topical antioxidant, implying that it accumulates in the body from circulation. According to the researchers, topical vitamin C penetrates the skin best in the form of ascorbic acid. Meanwhile, a 2013 study found that another vitamin C derivative commonly used in skincare, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, has a hydrating effect on the skin.

Find the right concentration

The key to using vitamin C in your skincare routine is identifying the right concentration for your skin type. In the case of oily or normal skin, L-ascorbic acid is the most potent form of the nutrient and can be the most beneficial. For dry and sensitive skin, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, a water-soluble vitamin C, can be less irritating.

What does L-ascorbic mean?

L-ascorbic acid is considered the most effective, bioavailable form of vitamin C. In fact, it is so powerful antioxidant it is oxidised by UV and air. For this reason, products should be stored in opaque or amber bottles. This is why all of our Apollo & Artemis products come in a custom-made dark bottle.

p H Level

It’s hard to know the pH of products, yet it is essential to how effective your topical vitamin C will be. Absorption of the nutrient  is mostly based on its pH level. In normal skin, you should use products with a low pH of approximately 3.5 for optimal absorption. On the other hand, If you have sensitive skin, you can use a formula with a pH of 5 to 6.  Our Alpha Vitamin C Facial Essence has a pH of 3.2.
